The map below is copied from the Thailand Guru website and shows the main areas in Bangkok where expats find apartments, condominiums and houses for rent. The yellow area is the central business district and consists mainly of apartments for rent and condominiums for sale or for rent, though houses for rent are available, too. The green areas are suburbs which are popular with foreigners and consist mainly of houses for rent.

Of course, apartments and condominiums to expat standards are located mainly within the central business district, whereas modern new houses for rent are far more abundant and much more economical in the suburbs.

Condominiums and apartments are abundant in suburban Bangkok, but for expats they tend to be located in Nonthaburi, Bangkapi, Bang Na, and some parts of Ratchadapisek near the subway. Houses are far more abundant in those regions.

There are modern conveniences all over Bangkok, but if you like to be located in the expat community then you would probably be happier in the central business district. If you want to be able to get in your car and go places without too much traffic then the suburbs is probably for you.

Regarding houses for rent, expats often choose suburban Bangkok for various reasons, including:

• more property space for a given budget in suburban Bangkok
• near international schools
• can drive to local stores quickly without much traffic
• can access the expressway quickly to go anywhere in the region
• environment, yards and neighborhoods, more like suburban life in their own country
